The on-street features included in the BCR/SUSTRANS DIY Streets Pilot Scheme were sited bearing several criteria in mind: resident preference, traffic-calming effectiveness, vehicular access to front gardens, and the result of 'tracking' software run by Sustrans. In effect, a computer-generated dustcart and fire engine are sent down the street to see if they pass through the parked cars, cycle racks, and tree planters. There is a very wide margin of error here, but the design needed to pass this test before going on to the Council for approval. Here are some of the images from the tracking exercise:
